Authenticity in Recovery

🖋️ The Lioness Journals | September 8, 2025

Authenticity is easy to celebrate when life feels steady. But when you’re navigating a setback or a season of uncertainty, authenticity can feel like the first thing to slip away.

I’ve noticed this in myself recently. Work changes have left me unsettled, and there are things in motion with my position that I can’t even talk about yet. That silence leaves me feeling like I have to put on a mask—to act like I have it all together, even when I don’t. And the truth is, that mask keeps me from connecting with others in real, meaningful ways. It makes me feel fake, split in two, anything but authentic.

What I’m learning is this: authenticity in recovery doesn’t mean broadcasting every messy detail. It means choosing to stay aligned with who I am, even when things around me feel shaky. It means admitting, “This is hard,” without letting that confession define me. It means remembering that I can be both in process and still true to myself.

When I look back on times I’ve hidden during struggle, I realize those were the moments I felt most disconnected. The times I allowed myself to show up as I truly was—uncertain, imperfect, but honest—were the moments I actually started to heal. And in that honesty, I noticed others leaning in, feeling safe enough to share their own struggles.

It’s a gift to be that safe place, but it’s also exhausting. Some days, it feels like everyone is drawing from my glass, not realizing how empty it’s getting. Authenticity invites connection, but it also requires boundaries—because recovery isn’t just about helping others through their storm, it’s about making sure I don’t drown in mine.

So today, I’m choosing authenticity in my own recovery. I’m giving myself permission to be honest about what hurts, while also holding onto hope for what’s ahead. Because recovery isn’t about pretending. It’s about rebuilding, piece by piece, in alignment with who you really are.

✨ How about you? When life feels unsettled, what helps you stay authentic to yourself?
