Finding My Grit (and My Gym Shoes)
🖋️ The Lioness Journals | October 13, 2025
This month’s Roar Journey theme, Resilience Rising, has been all about finding strength in motion. Over the past two weeks, we’ve explored what it means to be Brave — to face life’s challenges with quiet courage — and Bold, to take unapologetic action even when the path ahead feels uncertain. This week, we turn to a word that threads those two together: Grit — the passion and perseverance that keeps us moving for the long haul.
Grit is one of my favorite empowerment words. Just saying it out loud gives me that fierce, superhero-level confidence. The word itself sounds tough — like it means business — and its double meaning is not lost on me.
As a noun, grit describes small, hard granules of sand or gravel — rough, unyielding, abrasive. But figuratively, grit is that inner fire: the mental stamina and perseverance to withstand hardship, to keep moving no matter what stands in your way.
And I’ll be honest with you — there are days I wish I could tap into that level of grit effortlessly. To just feel that drive that keeps you going even when you feel stuck. Because if I’m being really real — I am stuck right now. And maybe that’s exactly why I’m writing about it.
Lately, I’ve allowed external forces, influences, and excuses — you know the ones: too much work, too tired, not enough time — to derail my routines. My fitness habits have fallen off track, and stress eating has crept in to fill the gaps. The result? A few unwanted pounds and a whole lot of self-frustration. But deeper than that, it’s the disconnection from my own discipline that’s weighing me down.
I’ve been through plenty of tough times in my life, so I know deep down that I have grit — I can tap into that perseverance and stamina to get through almost anything that comes my way.
Except… when it comes to getting my out-of-shape self to the gym.
Why is that? Why does there always seem to be that one thing — that elusive habit or discipline we just can’t seem to conquer? Is it a lack of motivation? Discipline? Laziness?
I’d argue it’s none of those things. Instead, I think when we let excuses take the microphone, grit quietly steps into the wings — patient, steady, waiting for us to call it back to center stage.
The truth is, grit doesn’t always roar. Sometimes it shows up quietly — in the moment we decide to try again after breaking a promise to ourselves, or when we choose to show up even if it’s just for ten minutes. Grit isn’t about perfection or constant progress; it’s about presence. It’s remembering that passion can ebb and flow, but perseverance means returning to what matters, over and over again, until we find our rhythm again.
So, my promise to myself this week (and to you) is to let grit take center stage again. I’m putting her right there in the spotlight — embracing her power, stamina, and resilience. I’m recommitting to honoring the promises I make to myself — to take better care of my health by moving my body, whether that means hitting the gym, walking outside, or simply doing something that keeps me strong and grounded.
🌸 What’s a habit, discipline, or activity you’re ready to take back — through grit and determination?
