Yesterday’s College Football Playoff National Championship between Indiana and Miami is being called a Cinderella story — and for good reason. A team that wasn’t supposed to be here. A win that wasn’t predicted. A moment that will live in history.
But what stayed with me most wasn’t the final score.
It was that play.
The Indiana quarterback, Fernando Mendoza (@fernandomendoza), running the ball on a 4th down in the 4th quarter.
Getting tangled up in tackles.
Refusing to go down.
Unwilling to settle for just another 1st down.
Propelling himself forward — bruised, scraped, disheveled — and then leaping with the ball stretched toward the goal line.
And then the glory moment — when that football crossed the plane of the goal line for a touchdown.
That moment is what success actually looks like.
Not polished.
Not clean.
Not easy.
Success looks like grit.
It looks like determination on your face and adrenaline in your veins.
It looks like doing whatever it takes to reach the goal — while staying grounded, intentional, and true to yourself.
When you really want something, when you believe in the possibility of what’s on the other side, you keep moving forward — even when it gets messy.
Or, as this young quarterback put it after his own improbable comeback:
“You don’t need the most stars, hype, or rankings. You just need discipline, heart, and people who believe in you — and you need to believe in your own abilities.”
— Fernando Mendoza
🦁 Today’s Roarffirmation:
I am willing to do the hard, messy, determined work it takes to reach my goals. With grit, determination, and persistence, I can reach any goal I set my mind to.
And remember this: you already have within you what it takes to reach the goal line. Believe in yourself, and the rest will fall into place.
— With Gratitude,
